activities

Cabuya is a small town, super relaxed. We recommend it as first stop in Costa Rica as it's so nice to come down and get a first touch of this beautiful country - without any kind of rush. After 4 days you are probably acclimatized and ready for all the touristic adventures you find all over the country. One first step might be Santa Teresa, a full service touristic town, really lively, but still wild west.

Cabuya: Activities on foot

  • La Isla Cabuya. You can get here in a 20 minutes walk, find it in Google Maps. You should check the tides and come 2 hours before - and leave 2 hours low tide.

  • Cabo Blanco Natural Reserve. Also around 20 Minutes from here. Costa Ricas first natural reserve, nice hike to a beach. Better come early in the morning to avoid middays' heat. Around 12$ entrance fee, plan 4 hours to get to the beach.

  • Homespot beach. I a 15 minutes walk, you get to our closest beach, we call it the secret beach, as it's quite hidden. It has a beautiful view, nice to chill at day time or for a campfire at night. Nice spot for surfers - beginners.

Cabuya: Activities by car / public bus

  • Nice Beaches are found on the way back to Montezuma. You drive close to the ocean an pass many beaches. The best ones are found after Playa Cedros. You can stop anywhere and try. Some have white sands, most are close to reefs, which is good for snorkeling. Some are hidden, some frequented often such as beautiful Playa Las Manchas.

  • Montezuma Waterfall. Drive back to â€‹Montezuma - on the steep corner in the beginning of the town you find the parking and entrance. Best would be water shoes to get there, flip flops probably won't make it.

  • Surfing. We have two incredible nice surf spots here, most times smaller, for beginners and intermediate surfers - beautiful waves. When the swell is on, super clean rides around head high. Of cause then you won't be the only one trying. Ask us when to go, for surf rental and surf classes, kids, families - and also intermediates who better learn something from the local heroes.

  • Santa Teresa. When the surf is too small here or you just want to enjoy a fully equipped surf town - check out Santa. It's around 45 minutes on roads - or 30 minutes off road, really nice track for 4 WD.

Endless Summer - Costa Rica

Travel in general

Traveling Costa Rica is a great adventure, no matter, how. Pros and Cons you face here are of cause different to other places in the world. Being stuck in the middle of Europe in a train station at a winter night or waiting half your life for the next plane - is a pain. Not here: Public transfer works in time. WTF! But a river crossing your road or holes in the pavement big as a bath tub might one of the challenges in this quite young country. Motorways and bridges just have not had the time to be built, but they will. Enjoy to go without, while you still can. Getting to most of the touristic highlights is possible with a regular car. But if you like to experience the wild, like tracks through the bush or drive on the beach, cross a river and not having to go around - or just for the fun of it, choose a 4WD. Sometimes it can also be the only way to the supermarket, if you don't want to get stuck in the mud. â€‹

Coming to Cabuya

Coming here from San José with public buses is incredibly simple. There is a direct bus every day from Terminal 7/11 at 6.00 am. Be at the counter at 5.45 and get a ticket to Montezuma for 17$. The bus on the ferry, so you don't have to change it. If you chose to travel later, you will have to change buses, that's quite annoying. If you travel in your own car, better make an online reservation of the "Ferry Puntarenas - Paquera", especially when you travel on a Friday. The traveling time is around 4-5 hours.
